World Breastfeeding Week … Blessed Nest Review and Giveaway!

August 4, 2009 By Beth 112 Comments

This Giveaway has CLOSED! THANKS for entering!!

As I said in my “Happy World Breastfeeding Week!” post, I am going to work on a series of reviews of my favorite nursing/breastfeeding items. My last post highlighted the cost savings of nursing your child vs. buying formula for their first year of life. The reason I want to post some reviews of some of my favorite nursing items is that I found there are SO many items out there and they can all sound great. So how do you really know if one is better than another? As with most other things in life, it is either trial and error or finding someone who has already been there done that. Since I was the first in my circle of family and friends who was pregnant and then nursing, I was the trial and error candidate. So I hope my reviews help you make some smart purchases to support your nursing efforts!

So onto the topic of nursing pillows … The Blessed Nest Nesting Pillow was my THIRD nursing pillow. I won’t mention the others but they are no longer used in our house as nursing pillows. (I sold one to someone who really wanted it and the other is used as a baby tummy time prop only!) My mom gave me my Nesting Pillow when I was pregnant the second time. I thought it was a waste of money at first. I already had two pillows I didn’t like, why would I need another?

My mom said it was also suppose to be a good maternity sleeping pillow. I was having a hard time sleeping then so I was game. That is when I became addicted to my Nesting Pillow. It was great around my belly and in between my legs. (And no, this is not a picture of me.) To all of the pregnant women out there, doesn’t that look as comfortable as you can imagine being while hugely pregnant but dying for a few hours of sweet blissful sleep?! Trust me it is!

After I had my second kiddo, I started using the Nesting Pillow for nursing. It was great. I left it in my bed though and would use that as my escape to nurse her in there in peace and quiet.

Even when I wasn’t pregnant, I slept with my Nesting Pillow in between my knees. I seemed to have lost the ability to sleep on my stomach, probably thanks to the post nursing boobs, so a side sleeper I have become! My husband has asked if the Nesting Pillow will ever leave our bed. I can say right now my answer is no. Sorry, honey!

Now with my third kiddo, my Nesting Pillow is living on the couch in the living room. With two other kiddos, I can’t hide myself as much as I might want to so I just camp out on the couch. My oldest calls it my “heavy pillow”. My second kiddo will drag it around and tell me to sit and try to lift it into my lap. They both know that is my pillow for when little bit wants to eat.

So my tip for using the Nesting pillow is that I like to shake the pillow so the filling goes towards one end of it. I then put that full side of the pillow on the side of my body that baby’s head is going to go on. I find this saves my back and gets him closer to me. The rest of the pillow cradles his back to keep him against me. This also lets me nurse just about hands free. Any nursing mom knows how amazing it is have use of one let alone two hands while you nurse! Hello telephone and remote control!

All that being said, here is the official description of the Nesting Pillow from Blessed Nest:

The Nesting Pillow is so much more than just a nursing pillow, but it is the best nursing pillow available. The unique properties of the buckwheat hull filling make it possible to move it around like a bean bag to find the perfect
position, and then the little pyramid-shaped hulls interlock together to conform to the shape and hold the position you need. Plus, the organic materials we use allow air to circulate to keep everyone cool and comfortable.
The Nesting Pillow is about 30” wide, 16” deep and 5” high, quarter moon-shaped, and is filled with organic buckwheat hulls. It is made of organic cotton canvas, with a removable, washable slipcover made of organic cotton French Terry and cotton print fabrics. Extra slipcovers are also available.

Now since I got my lovely Nesting Pillow, Blessed Nest has introduced their Nest Egg Take Along Pillow! I completely forgot that my mom bought one of these for me when I was pregnant with little bit. (Thanks again, mom! Mine is the same Aqua color in the picture of below!) I remembered I had stashed it in his room for when I needed it as I started writing this review. It is now out and in the diaper bag for me to take along during our next outing.

Blessed Nest has generously offered to give one my blog readers their very own Blessed Nest Nest Egg Take Along Pillow! Here is the scoop on this awesome pillow:

The little extra something you need to use with your Nesting Pillow or on its own, The Nest Egg gives support for your head, arm, breast, or for a little extra height under baby’s head. It’s small and lightweight enough to take along for support and comfort on the go!The inside pillow is made with 230 thread count 100% organic cotton sateen and filled with organic buckwheat hulls (16″ by 13″ and about 1 1/2 lb.)
The slipcover has an envelope closure that makes it comfortable to use on either side, while still being easy to remove for laundering. It is made of pre-washed and dried 100% organic cotton flannel or sateen fabrics from our favorite eco-friendly designer, Harmony Art.

Blessed Nest supports a charity each month. This month they are supporting the The Riley Project through their Riley’s Raindrop for The Riley Project campaign. I mention this here because if you purchase the Aqua Nest Egg pillow pictured above a large portion of the purchase price goes to this campaign! Plus you are entered in a drawing to win a Nesting Pillow so take a minute to check out this campaign!

Additionally, Blessed Nest has offered my blog readers 10% off any purchase made through their website during this giveaway time period. The coupon code is WBW. I am sure by now I have you convinced you need the Nesting Pillow for your girlfriend, your sister, your daughter, or even yourself! All the fabrics are lovely (I really like Sonoma and Kalidascope) but the Blue Truffles is kind of hypnotic and would look best in our surroundings.
