Four Year Old + Scissors = Custom Shirt

September 14, 2012 By Beth 11 Comments

The kids pick out their clothes for school the night before and leave them downstairs. On Wednesday night, Sophie had picked out a skirt and short sleeved shirt that didn’t match but whatever. Hopefully by now, her preschool teachers have realized that she picks out her own clothes! Thursday morning starts off normal and she gets dressed. She then comes and asks “Can I wear a long sleeved shirt? Some kids at school have been wearing long sleeved shirts.” I told her sure and to put her short sleeve shirt away since it wasn’t dirty.

She picked out her pretty purple zebra shirt and wore it to school. She came home from school and all was good. About two hours later, she comes up to Brian beyond proud of herself and what she did.

His conversation to me went …

Brian: ummmm
  OMG!!!!
me: what?
Brian: sophie just CUT off the sleeves of her zebra shirt!!
 me: WHAT?!
Brian: she was so proud of herself….
me: where did she find scissors?????
Brian: look daddy, I made it short sleeved…
  where didn’t she find scissors
At that point, I couldn’t stop laughing. I was laughing so hard I was crying. What am I going to do with her?!

Here is the picture he texted me …

So at dinner I talked to her about it and asked why she did this and she said she didn’t know. We also reminded that her that we don’t use scissors without asking permission. Plus we had to add the family rule that if we need to alter our clothes that we need to ask permission for that too.
oh my. I guess I need to figure out if I can actually make the shirt short sleeved now!
What fun has happened at your house this week? Hopefully clothing was safe from scissors at your house unlike ours!

hehe!! Everything here was pretty typical. The biggest clothing debate we had was:

Me: You wore that on Monday, I realize it’s clean again, but you can’t wear it again until next week.
    J: WHY?
Me: So that people know you have more one outfit.
    J: WHY?
Me: UGH, just pick something else.

Sara – LOL We have had this debate at our house. It either means that the kids have too many clothes or we do laundry too much!

I’ve started teaching me 3.5 yr old how to use scissors. I’m a little scared something like this is in my future!

Oh just wait … it is not amusing what the kids find to cut with scissors but sometimes you just have to laugh!

Wow! She really change her shirt for sure! Now it is not a long sleeved shirt! Is she going to be wearing her new creation! The shirt still looks cute! But no-nobody at our house did anything as exciting as this!

LOL! Well, it’s good she was reminded of the rules not to use scissors without permission, but on the plus side, she’s definitely a creative child with a fashion sense of her own!
