Reusable Containers to the Budget Rescue

October 15, 2009 By Beth 4 Comments

You know those Rubbermaid, Tupperware, Ziploc, Glad, … whatever they are containers that probably fall out of the cupboard every time you open that door in your kitchen. You love them and you hate them. Well today’s tip is about those containers.

I was putting leftover pizza away last week and went get a plastic bag to put it in. Leftover pizza always went in a plastic zippered bag growing up. It is a habit. My husband was in the kitchen doing something else and asked why I was using a bag and I told him that “leftover pizza goes in a bag” like it was a fact of life. He looked at me and handed me one of larger reusable containers and said “Here. We already paid for these. Bags cost money.”
I honestly never really thought about it like that. We do reuse zippered plastic bags. You will often find them in the dish drying area drying out from being washed. But my husband’s point was why use a bag if don’t have to and can just put it in a container. I don’t go as far as my grandma and keep every glass or plastic jar I empty to put leftovers in. Those go in the recycle bin and I just use the reusable plastic containers. At least they don’t hurt when they fall out of the cupboard on my feet!;)

So my tip thanks to my husband is to break out those reusable plastic containers and save on those zippered plastic bags! It is not only the green thing to do but the budget friendly thing to do!

That's really an interesting take, I think I'm the opposite! I would have never thought to put leftover pizza in a plastic bag, we always put it in a container! Funny how it's different strokes for different folks.

Cool! We had the same idea, well we also use zippered bags for our left over foods as well as for storing raw meats in our freezer. Because it can keep the food tightly secure. But if you're going to need food stacking container for your packed lunch you may use a stainless steel container or a tiffin carrier which you can acquire at Happy Tiffin site. The tiffin containers is integrated with secure lock in each sides and are very stylish. Its perfect for storing lots of foods in it. 😉
