Flush for Good Worldwide Water Sanitation

September 29, 2013 By Brian 354 Comments

Thanks to American Standard and Flush for Good for making this post possible.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

FlushForGood_LogoAlone-02

Living on well water, we are very aware of how local water usage affects our daily lives.  If a toilet runs for too long or someone leaves a hose on in the backyard, we see a big change in water pressure for several days afterwards.  If we have gone through a long period of hot days with little rain, we can actually have some pretty big problems with getting enough water to clean clothes, dishes, and ourselves.  Did you know that, according to the U.S. Drought Monitoring Service, 64% of the United States experience moderate to exceptional drought conditions in 2012.  This year, 36 states are expected to be impacted by water shortages!

As bad as that may sound, in many countries around the world, the water situation is far worse.  I have personally been to some places that have it pretty bad.  Toilets are unsanitary, trash is everywhere, and children bathe and wash clothes in water that you would quickly avoid even walking through.  It’s pretty rough.

Some quick facts for you:

  • 1.5 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation
  • Diarrhea causes 1.5 millions deaths each year in developing countries
  • About 85% of human waste goes directly into the world’s rivers and streams
  • Every minute, 3 children die because of dirty water and poor sanitation

That definitely makes me think about my kids and the kind of world that I want to leave behind for them.  Here’s the problem.  With a growing world population and 99% of the world’s water either too salty or too frozen to drink, we have to be thinking about ways to stretch and clean the limited supply of usable water that we do have.

That’s why we are so happy to be working with American Standard once again.  Back in June, we reviewed the Champion Pro Toilet.  This toilet uses far less water than your typical toilet.  And with every purchase of a Champion Toilet in 2013, American Standard is donating a Safe Toilet pan (or SATO) to an area without plumbing infrastructure.  Check out FlushforGood.com for more information about the SATO.  While you are there, give a like or share.  For every 100 likes or shares, American Standard is giving 1 SATO to an area that really needs it.  Together, we can save thousands of lives!

We are also excited to offer one of you a chance to help out.  American Standard is offering one of our readers a $200 gift card to either Lowe’s or Home Depot (reader’s choice).  You can use it for whatever you want, but I’d suggest putting it towards a Champion Toilet.  You get a new toilet and you get to help out a local community in addressing a host of sanitation problems.  If that’s not “win-win”, I don’t know what is!  Here are the details:
