3 ways to save money on your flower garden this year

June 24, 2014 By Beth 19 Comments

Growing a nice flower garden can be a great way to relieve stress and spruce up your home- but it can also be hard on the budget! To save some money on your flower garden this year, take a look at some of these easy money saving tips.

3 ways to save money on your flower garden this year

Follow nature’s lead

One of the best ways to save money on any garden is to pay attention to what you have in your yard already. For example, if you have an old stump in the yard, split it open and plant flowers in it. The stump will provide nutrients and hold water well, plus the flowers will eventually help the stump break down- saving you the time to remove it! If your yard is very sunny in some spots, plant flowers that need lots of sun. Plant shade mixes in shady areas. The ore you work with what you have, the more time and money you will save on your overall flower garden.

Grow from cuttings and seeds

Growing from old plants and new seeds may seem like a lot of work, but it can be done easily and it saves a bundle! A package of seeds will be roughly 50 cents (or less) and can grow around 40 flowers- or you can buy flowers that are already started for about $6-$10 a pot (or around $10 flowers). The money savings is definitely with the seeds! You can plant them indoors in early Spring, and by late Spring transplant your already growing seedlings.

Make your own planters

If you go the route of seeds, you will need to start them right and cheaply- so make your own planters and compost! Create your own planters simply by cutting plastic milk jugs in half or washing out and reusing yogurt cups. Simply plant your seeds and place them in the windowsill where they will get the most light to grow. For compost, start fertilizing your plants with used coffee grounds and tea bags as you build a small compost pile out of banana peels and other fruits remains. It’s organic, cheap, and does something with your old food besides throwing it in the trash.

We use our kitchen scraps and other compostables to mulch the ground before planting. That saves us from buying bedding mix or bagged compost.

I wish I could have a flower garden! Everything dies here, it’s too hot and dry {and I have a brown thumb}.

Some of my garden is from starts and some is from seeds. The seeds were much cheaper and I’m surprised with how well they are doing!
