Little Switches that Make a Difference

Ever make a little switch that made a big difference in your life?

When asked this question, I had to think about it for a minute. I wasn’t really sure what switches made that big of a difference in my life. So I started thinking about random things and came up few suggestions for you.

You are probably tired of it but one of our big switches this year was a MONTHLY meal plan. Yes, monthly. We were trying our best to do weekly meal plans last year and while we got it done most weeks we had weeks where nothing happened at all. Now we are on the fourth month of the year but we have had four monthly meal plans made. We have mostly stuck to these meal plans. It is really helping our grocery budget because we plan our meals off what we have in the freezer and pantry. We will have a new challenge in this when our local produce starts producing but we can make it happen. I have gotten a lot of questions about the monthly meal planning. I actually have a post going up tomorrow to answer those questions. I want to let you know now, it is possible and it really doesn’t hurt! I promise that last part!;) If you need some ideas, you should check our April Monthly Meal Plan that went up this week.

So what other little switches have made a difference?

  • We don’t buy many new clothes for the kids. Don’t panic. The drawers and closets for my kids are FULL of clothes. Some are over full! I learned early on that kids don’t wear out much of their clothes so it is easy to get them second hand. I shop at a few thrift shops in the area and consignment sales too. I will also buy clothes in bulk from craigslist where folks are selling a whole lot of clothes. This makes them cheaper. Finally, we started swapping kids’ stuff. More on that come tomorrow too!
  • We pay most of our bills online. We mail out one to two bills a month. This has been a big savings in the stamp department. The one bill I pay by mail, I could pay online but they charge a fee I refuse to pay as a stamp is cheaper. If you add up your bills and stamps, could have a nice little savings there over the course of a year!
  • This one is going to seem lame but we do dishes right after dinner now. We used to wait and do dinner dishes after the kids went to bed. The kids never wanted to sit still long enough for us to do this chore so it just seemed easier. I dreaded the kitchen full of dirty stuff after their bed time though. So we decided even if we have to divide up (one of us with the kids, one doing dishes) that we would do dishes after dinner. It has made our evenings so much more enjoyable. Plus if the dishwasher is full, it gets started then and some nights we even manage to empty it before we head to bed. Like I said, this may seem lame but it made a big difference in our evenings so I had to share!

What little switches have you made that make a difference? Is it in your routines? What you buy? Who you do stuff with? Leave me a comment and let me know!!

Running in Place or Not Even Moving?

Ever feel like you are running in place but you aren’t even moving? That is me right now.

I have been on the path to a healthier me for about 14 months now. I am proud to say that while my weight hasn’t changed much my body has and I have not only smaller clothes to prove it but I can do more than I could before. I can chase the kids around the house or push the tricycle through the yard going “super fast”.

What I haven’t been able to do so far though is to commit to a fitness program for the long term. I have tried DVD series that schedule workouts, the Wii programs that schedule workouts, the stationary bike, my balance ball, walking, elliptical (before it was replaced with the bike) … you see the list goes on and on. I can have a reason for each of them …. space, too cold, not enough time to do it when the kids aren’t under foot … have you tried to exercise with toddlers running under you … it isn’t pretty!

Recently I started walking and realized how much I love it. I was so excited to see results on the scale the week that I walked. The thing is that it got cold again so my walking activities died. I am the first to admit my walking peaks when it is nice outsides as I suffer from pretty bad allergies year round so the “good days” to walk are limited. I know that building up my walking time and effort can lead to my goal of running. I always hated running. We had to run in circles in elementary school and get dots on our hands for the laps we did. I am not sure why that would make anyone want to run but it didn’t motivate me. We did get caught in the rain the other day during a quick walk out so I ran part of the way home. yup, me. I ran. I am sad to say, it felt kinda good. It would be nice to do that on a regular basis … especially with our hills.

Did I mention we live on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains? Well we do. That means nothing here is flat. Our normal walking route has a KILLER hill … oh your butt will hurt after you walk that monster. It would be great to train on a flat surface and move up the hills so I can actually tackle the real hills.

That pretty much sums up with I would love to have a Hayneedle Treadmill so that I can actually run in place!

Getting the Best Deals

Getting the best deals from the brands your family loves … how do you that today? I can let you in on a few of my tips for making your grocery and basic needs trips easier on your budget.

I talked to a co-worker about this recently so these are the tips I gave her.
1) Watch for sales. Simple, right? I am amazed at how many folks don’t do this though! Amazed at how many folks pay full price for a box of cereal because they ran out and didn’t buy three boxes when it was on sale. The typical sale cycle is six weeks so get enough or close to enough to last your family that six weeks.

2) Match your coupons with the sales. I do this a lot but focus on key items we use like diapers, cereal, and frozen veggies. It is a lot easier on my budget to stock up on diapers at $5 a package than to pay $9-10 a package at their regular price. I will get at least a month of diapers if not two months at a time. Plus this limits my trips to the store. Any week that I can skip a trip to the store saves me money in our budget. Something to think about there.

3) Be flexible in your brands you buy. I found this out with toilet paper. While my husband has a brand he loves, we don’t have to buy that every single time. Especially with little kids that go to the bathroom all of the time. So I buy what I can when it is on sale with coupons. I did learn that I am not happy with saving a few extra dollars on my laundry soap. So I do major stocks up on it when it goes buy one, get one free and they often have coupons.

4) Find a store that works for your shopping style. You don’t have to go to five stores a week. We hit up two most weeks. Every once and awhile I will hit up a different grocery store but I will trade it out for my other grocery store, not add it in my shopping.

So how do you make your shopping trips a success and not a challenge? Do you use these same tips or do you have your own? Let me know as I love to get ideas from you as we can all learn from each other on how to make our budgets work with the brands we love!

My Aspirations for New Possibilities in My Life

The question asked was … what are your aspirations and plans for new possibilities in your life?

That isn’t an easy question. This year I really tried to focus on myself and giving myself time to be healthier. While I won’t say I met this goal, I will say that I started working towards it. I am a smaller me even if it is evident on the scale it is visible in appearance and in my clothes. I can run after my kids or back in the house four times over for whatever we forgot as we try to leave the house. I think this year showed me that I can work on goals for myself while still being “mom”.

Next year, I want to continue to work towards the healthier me goal. I know I can do more than I am doing. I know that to do this I need to find something I really love to do that keeps me active. I know this is possible because I have found that key in the past. I did learn this year that what has worked before won’t always work again so I have been trying new things … while on our budget which adds to the challenge! I am looking for a scheduled challenge that I can start and complete next year. A 30 day work out challenge was the one thing I did commit to and complete this year so that mean something for what drives me. I need to learn from that and keep moving towards a challenge goal!

Another goal is to keep up my graduate classes. I often question why I am taking them and if it is worth my time away from my family activities and activities I want to do … like exercise more! This year I completed three classes … three out of ten for the Masters degree. The end goal is there so hopefully I can get there and not lose my mind in the process. My degree will be in Instructional Technology which is a big stretch from what I do daily right now. I don’t know where this will lead me, my career, or my life but for now it is where I am headed. I am hoping for big things in the future from this accomplishment even if I don’t know what they are right now!

What are your aspirations and goals for new possibilities in your life? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Mamas and Papas Lightweight Strollers come to the US!

Have you heard of the brand Mamas & Papas … specifically when it comes to lightweight strollers? I hadn’t until recently. Mamas & Papas is a UK brand that recently launched in the United States!

Look at this cute Cherry Dots print on the Tour model lightweight stroller by Mamas & Papas! (Psst … I LOVE dot prints and am a major sucker for buying stuff in dot prints!)
Details …

Mamas & Papas has created a fleet of lightweight strollers that are perfect for situations where flexibility is paramount. All Mamas & Papas lightweight strollers also feature an over-the-shoulder carrying strap for when the stroller is folded and in transit.

A culmination of 29 years experience in baby transport, and in-house design force that is second to none and unequivocal quality and style has evolved the new lightweight umbrella stroller range from Mamas & Papas – the chic new design-led baby brand from Great Britain.

  • Trip – This stroller offers vented side panels and is the must-have getaway product.
  • Trek – Featuring a simple seat recline system, little ones have the option to nap while on the move.
  • Tour – Increased seat padding and a deeper recline will ensure comfort during longer journeys
  • Cruise – Perfect for everyday use, this stroller features a five-position recline, adjustable foot rest, easy peek canopy window and additional storage pockets.
  • Voyage – Features an integrated sun visor and sun canopy, quilted seat and removable toddler pillow and chest pads for extra comfort, this stroller is the highlight of the new Mamas & Papas lightweight stroller range.

I have to say that the Cruise model has great features and would be well loved at my house. While this print isn’t dots, I love how simple the print is. It isn’t plain yet the black color won’t show ever ounce of dirt that is bound to get on it because you know you would be using it ALL-OF-THE-TIME!!

Mabel’s Labels Essay Submission

This post in response to the Mabel’s Labels Contest. You can find out the details here!

Electrical storms are going to wipe out the Internet (perhaps forever). You have one day left to write about your passions: what do you want to say to the blogosphere in 300 words or less?

Dear friends …
It appears all of this may no longer be any more. I guess I will dig out my pen and paper here soon and start writing all of my crazy thoughts and tips for myself to read. I hope that you have found the tips useful, the giveaways fun, and the quirkiness of my posts amusing. I have fully enjoyed sharing all of this with you.

I honestly wonder what I will do with my time that I spend online. I guess I will pick up the newspaper. Maybe I will read those parenting magazines that keep showing up here and I never have time to read. I wonder if that is why my kids eat whatever we give them, sleep pretty darn good, are generally healthy (minus the past week, of course!) and are still around without any major injuries created by us or them! hmmm … maybe I will just keep skimming those magazines for the recipes and crafts. Those are the parts I enjoy the most anyway.

Crafts … oh, I will have time for crafts again. I have a whole craft dresser in the basement. It is currently the storage for everything I used to love. My crocheting, wash rags were my specialty, … basket making, the kids currently abuse my masterpiece basket with puzzle pieces, … sewing, my sewing table has become a storage table and my husbands hole-y t-shirts are well still hole-y … I can’t forget writing. Maybe one day again my audience will be more than me or there will be a book of my quirky tips. So you just keep waiting for that book to come. Don’t hold your breath though because I have some reading and crafting to catch up on before I work on that book writing.
Be sure to check out Mabel’s Contest site yourself!
Thanks for reading!

Top Ten Travel Tips

This post is my top-ten checklist for creating a fun family vacation without all the distractions!

1. Plan ahead with your vacation schedule.
2. Write everything down to the pillows you take with you on your packing list.
3. Write an activity list for each child and give them their own bag of “fun stuff”.
4. Write a list of household stuff that needs to be done before you leave. (Pets, thermostat, mail stop, etc)
5. Schedule your vehicle to be checked out if you are driving a couple of weeks before your trip.
6. Clean out said vehicle prior to the trip. Yes, it will get messed up but you will be happy packing a clean vehicle!
7. Figure out what you can buy on your trip instead of packing. Food? Baby items? This might save you a headache and some space!
8. Organize your trip maps, documents, hotel information, etc in a binder and put it in the front of the vehicle or in your purse. You won’t be looking for that map or check-in information when you need it!
9. Make sure your cell phones and any other electronics (camera batteries, etc) are charged the day before your trip. After they are charged, throw the charging cord in your bag, just in case!
10. Throw a candy bar and a drink in your purse. When you get on the road, treat yourself to your snack for making it on the road. You deserve it!

We don’t travel a lot with three kids that are three and under. We do make trips to visit my family but that is a day trip. Even with those day trips, a lot of these items apply to traveling with kids. The one trip we had where we stayed in a hotel with the three kids was enough to make we want to wait awhile to do that again. The kids were perfect but it took every thing out of me to manage that trip. It only worked due to planning and letting stuff go, like not having socks for Little Dude’s outfit and just buying them at the mall when we got to where we were going!
