Healthy Foodie Tip on a Budget

January 13, 2010 By Beth 1 Comment

Bulk buying scares many people. There I said it. I know it is true. I have had many friends tell me just that. I don’t “need” that much chicken or toilet paper or apples. I am one … two … a family with small kids that don’t each much. OK, it is time to stop the excuses!

I took the three kidlets to Sam’s Club on my own last night. (I have told you in the past I am losing my mind and this is a prime example of that but that is its own story!) We left Sam’s Club with apples, clementines, lettuce, grapefruit, bananas, grapes, cheese cubes, milk, and a workout DVD. Now when you buy food at Sam’s it is in bulk. I admit to that. The bag of grapefruit almost made me say no. Then I thought about it … grapefruit doesn’t go bad as fast as say bananas. If the grapefruit is sitting there, I will eat it. If it isn’t sitting there, I will eat something else. My girls (kidlet 1 and 2 who are 3 and 2 respectively) can PLOW through grapes, apples, and bananas so there are no issues there. The lettuce easily adds a salad to every dinner and some for lunches. My girls love salads. Don’t worry, I hear your comments! My kids don’t eat fruit and veggies so that won’t work for us. You know what, if that is what you have around, your kids WILL eat it or they will just wait until the next … healthy … meal! Simple. We leave fruit on the table in a big bowl. My girls will climb up to the table and take an apple on their own … these are 3 and 2 year olds! If they can grab an apple, so can you! Yesterday, my 3 year old got an apple and I didn’t even notice it. She came out to tell me she was done with it. She had eaten over half of it as her snack!
As for the cheese, you know cheese freezes pretty well, right? If not, you do now! Cheese is a great snack when you have a small portion.

And well that DVD, Sam’s had a great price on their work out DVDs. It was $8.88 which is even cheaper than the sale price of $10 at Target this week!

So are you going to go grab a cookie or an apple? Think about it. Give buying fruit in bulk a thought. You will probably surprise yourself what you can eat and if you can’t eat it on your own, find or make yourself a friend to share those extra grapefruit with when you buy them!

Leave me some comment love on how you fit eating healthy food on a budget!

We are a small family, but we bulk buy our shredded cheese and just keep it in smaller bags in the freezer. It works for us!
