4 Fun Activities that will Boost Your Child’s Math Skills

July 21, 2014 By Beth 2 Comments

Children learn in different ways, but all children learn by having fun! In fact, all people do. If you can turn education into something your child enjoys, studies have shown they have a better chance at excelling in school- and that includes in science and math. Here are a few ways to get your child to learn math while enjoying themselves.

Number Treasure Hunt

If your child is a visual learner, take them on a number treasure hunt. Go on a number safari. Anytime you are out and about, ask your child to look for numbers in signs, and on license plates, and anywhere else around. Once they get to ten, give them a treat as their “treasure.” If your child can do simple math, ask them to find equations. For example, ask “What two numbers added together make 15?” Once they find a seven and an eight, or a five and a ten, they solved it.

Number Book

If your child does better with physical learning, have them help you make a number book. Help your child flip through an old newspaper, book, or magazine and cut out all the numbers to count to 100. Paste them on a sheet of paper and have your child count them to you. The, do the same with math equations.

Cook up some math

If your child does better with auditory learning, have them cook with you. You call out the recipe and they measure it out. This is a great way to introduce them to not only math, but also cooking!

Get physical

If your child can learn in all ways and loves to stay busy, combine them into a fun workout and obstacle course. Hey, multitasking is what moms do best, right? Well this fun activity can help you get in a workout as you play with your child and help them with math. Set up a course, or go to the park. Call out a number and an activity to do. For example, you could say “Time for 10 jumping jacks!” and you and your child will do 10 Jumping Jacks together. Afterward, have them run an obstacle course with you and the only way they can go to the next level is to do the activity and answer three number or math related questions while they are doing it.
