Thankful for a Simple Gift: Breastfeeding

With the holidays right here, I have been thinking about what I have to be thankful about. As I sat down to write this post about breastfeeding, I realized I have so much to be thankful for when it comes this topic.

My boiled down to the basic facts breastfeeding experiences …
My oldest child was a non-latcher. I was a determined first time mommy though and exclusively pumped for her until I got her to latch but even then was lucky to get her to nurse once a day. It was pure determination on my part to get her to a year on breast milk that got her to that point. My younger daughter and now Little Dude had no issues latching. They both decided to protest the bottle and wait it out for me to get home so that presents its own set of challenges.

With my both of my girls, I had such an over supply of milk that I started donating milk to families in need. After much research, I went with milkshare.com to donate to breast milk directly to families in need. My experiences and connecting with other moms through that network is something that I will always remember. It was such an amazing gift to give someone and something that certainly can’t have a monetary value. It is all from the heart when you hand over hundreds of ounces of frozen breast milk!

I have had many moms tell me that nursing is hard work. It often is. I know that first hand and had to learn to ask for help! It seems that I have had every issue that I can with breastfeeding during the past 3 plus years. At times I wonder why I put myself through the mastitis, thrush, cracked skin, lack of supply, and over supply but I have to say it doesn’t take long to realize why it is a gift worth giving to your baby. It has been the same with all three kids for me. It takes one look at a chubby, growing baby with breast milk dribbled on their face to realize that YOU have provided them with everything it took them to get that way! It makes every painful, frustrating, exhausting moment worth it and all you can do is smile at the little one in your arms as the love pours out of your heart to them.

Why do I continue to blog about breastfeeding?
My posts on breastfeeding started months ago when I passed along the money savings of breastfeeding in this post here. Since then I have been blessed to provide reviews and giveaways on several products related to breastfeeding with the constant reminder that this is a huge budget saver. It has become a passion of mine to share and offer up tips for breastfeeding moms. I can tell you know it didn’t start as a passion. It started as something I wanted to give a try to save my growing family money in our budget. I never thought I would become a voice for breastfeeding among my friends, family, or even on a blog. I feel truly blessed to have this voice and hope that it has provide some of you with the confidence to keep provide the simple gift of breast milk to your little ones.

Is being able to breastfeed your little one of your notes of thanks to be thankful for this holiday season?

Expressiva Nursing Shirt Review and Giveaway

I am wearing this great shirt that Expressiva gave me to review and I really love it. Each time it goes through the wash, I seem to grab it out and wear it again. For me, that is a sign of a shirt that I love!

Smocked Tunic Top in Organic Cotton is so soft an easy to wear. When it came and I tried it on and it seemed a little big but I tossed it in the laundry basket. The shirt came out of the wash and fit perfectly. So I would say to order the Organic Cotton shirts true to the size chart on their website!

I only have a few nursing tops and I love to wear them out and about to making nursing easier and less flashy.

Moboleez (Nursing Cover) Giveaway!

Moboleez has offered one of my blog readers one of their nursing cover hats as a giveaway!

What is Moboleez? MoBoleez hats are based on a simple, fun idea.

The idea? Design a hat just for the breastfeeding baby, with a tiny little head and great big brim that gives mom a little privacy and shields baby from distracting lights or noise.

The fun? Super soft, all-natural fabrics, baby-friendly colours, and beautiful, humourous illustrations for the top of the head (visible when breastfeeding of course!) And, lift up the brim to see a little message from baby!

I haven’t had a chance to try this yet as I wasn’t offered a review but I really wanted to share this inventive product with my readers. I am excited that I will get to try it myself though because I recently won one of these from the Mommy News Blog. Check out Judy’s blog for great breastfeeding tips and boutique (A Mother’s Boutique) for great breastfeeding products!

Simply Wishes Hands Free Pumping Bra Review

This review is for all of the nursing and pumping readers out there! I recently had the opportunity to review the Simply Wishes hands free pumping bra. My old pumping bra was a basic pumping bra that served its purpose. Nothing fancy but it worked (and saved my pumping relationship with my oldest who was a non-latcher!) Simply Wishes pumping bra is a huge upgrade from my old pumping bra. Besides its sweet pink color, it is adjustable! It has a front extender and the back can adjust with a Velcro panel! This means you get the perfect and the perfect generally means better pumping with an end result of more milk!

The Simply Wishes pumping bra is a great investment for any mom who will need to be pumping to maintain their nursing relationship with their baby. It has the potential to make your pumping time more relaxed and less of a chore which is always an added bonus when you are pumping. As a mom who reads, cuts coupons, blogs, types up emails, you name while she pumps … once you have a hands free pumping bra, you will never pump again without one!

You can buy the Simply Wishes hand free pumping bra directly from their website.

Why do I post about breastfeeding items? Breastfeeding your baby is not only the healthiest option for you and your baby but one of the best budget savers around. Be sure to check out my post about the cost savings that breastfeeding gives your family here!

Note: I received a Simply Wishes hands free pumping bra to support this review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my original thoughts and opinions.

Hotslings Nursing Cover Review and Giveaway

** This giveaway has ended. Thanks for entering. **

If you were paying attention in my review of the Hotslings Milkdaze cami I mentioned that I had two products from Hotslings to review. This is that second review!

Hotslings sent me their nursing cover to review. I picked the Leaves Nior Nursing Cover w/ Black Bias Trim. (No, that is not me in the picture! It is a lovely Hotslings model!) The covered arrived and I left it in the package for a day. The next day I tossed the nursing cover into my purse on the way out the door with my three kids. I knew Little Dude would have to nurse while we were out. So we get to where we were going and I dug the cover out of my purse. I immediately notice that it is asymmetrical. I thought it seemed odd but I put the longer side on my side that I would be nursing from and we gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of coverage the cover gave me and that I didn’t have to adjust it at every little move by Little Dude. I did (and still do) switch it around to nurse from the other side. The one comment I made to Hotslings about the cover is I wish the bias edge at the top was a little stiffer so that I could see inside it a little easier. That being said, this has become my primary nursing cover. I use a nursing cover more for me than Little Dude. I would rather not show off my bare side or flash anyone as we get situated or wrap up at the end. I realize nursing covers aren’t for everyone but this one is a great one if you are looking for one. I personally love the fact it doesn’t look like an apron you are wearing around your neck.;)

I was also told the cover can be used as a shopping cart cover, high chair cover, or car seat cover. I haven’t tried any of those yet but I do love the multi-use personality this cover has!

So why did I review this product? In case you are new around my blog, nursing is one of my constant money saving tips for moms. Check out my post about the cost savings you get with nursing here!

Hotslings has generously offered to give one my blog readers one of their great nursing covers!

Hotslings Milkdaze Cami Review and Giveaway

**This giveaway has ended!**

If you are a recent mom then you have probably heard of Hotslings. They make a great pouch style sling. My Hotslings sling was my first sling. I wanted a sling without rings or ties or anything else. I was a first time mom and feeling overwhelmed so I wanted simple. My Hotslings sling gave me just that. I have used my Hotslings sling for each of my kids and still recommend it to new moms. I totally love all of the new prints they offer!

All that being said, did you know that Hotslings offers more than just slings?! I didn’t until I was digging around their website one day. They now having nursing covers, nursing apparel, and accessories which include a pouch and a kids sling. OK, going off topic again. My girls have a kids sized Hotsling and they LOVE to carry their baby dolls in it.

Back on topic … Hotslings has provided me the opportunity to review two of their newer products so this the first of those two reviews. The first review is for the their new nursing cami called Milkdaze. I received this cami in white. I was very surprised it didn’t have any hooks. I was told I could wear it with or without a bra. I was skeptical. So I gave myself the challenge to wear it all day on a day I was around Little Dude all day. I was pleased with the fit when I first put the cami on. Honstely, I was really pleased. It didn’t look like a nursing cami at all. I put a button down shirt over it and was off and running for the day. There is an extra piece of material at the top to give it a layered look that really adds to the appeal of this cami. I did find that after I continued to bust it open to nurse that I had to watch the readjustment of that area so I didn’t up with a big gap there. oops! I got the hang of it pretty quick and basically over adjusted it to make sure I wasn’t showing skin between the layers. The fit of the cami kept all day which was very impressive. To further show that I do really enjoy this cami, I have already worn it again!

So why did I review this product? In case you are new around my blog, nursing is one of my constant money saving tips for moms. Check out my post about the cost savings you get with nursing here!

Hotslings has generously offered one of my blog readers a Milkdaze cami in their choice of black or white!

On the Fly Bottle Warmer Review

I recently had the opportunity to review the On the Fly bottle warmer thanks to The Product Review Place and On the Fly.

I want to start off why I reviewed this product. As a breastfeeding mom, I am not always around my baby. Yet, breastfed babies desire (and often demand) to have warm milk. They are used to milk being at body temperature. Warmed milk is best for babies because it is processed better in their digestive track. All that being said, it can be hard to warm a bottle on the go. It isn’t normally possible to get to a sink with warm water to warm it. I tried a car warmer at one point found that to be not practical most of the time. So when I heard about On the Fly bottle warmers, I wanted to give them a try. Anything that can help moms keep on the breastfeeding path as long as possible is a budget saving find in my opinion.

I received a Large Starter kit. This kit is made for bottles 8-11 ounces. We are using Born Free bottles so this kit fit those bottles the best. (There is also a Small Starter Kit for 4 ounce bottles.) The kit came nicely packaged with the instructions, the cow print sock, and five warmers.

Here is a blurb from the On the Fly website about what is in the Large Starter Kit:

On The Fly™ Starter Kit includes a large bottle sock to be utilized with wide
bottles from 8 to 11 oz. and 5 large individually wrapped disposable bottle
warmers. Each warmer provides up to 8 hours continuous heat.

The bottle sock is made with all natural ingredients. 95% cotton and 5% spandex. Washable in cold water. The warmer is all natural made of iron powder, water, activated carbon, wood, powder and salt. The heat is air activated when removed from packaging and will maintain its warmth and heat bottles for up to 8
hours.

Product can be used with wide mouth bottles by Avent, GentleFlow from
Gerber, Born Free™ and Dr. Brown’s. Not intended for use with Playtex
liners.

Since I am not the primary source of bottle feeding in our house, my husband was excited to see this product. He is often on the go with our kids with a bottle in tow so anything to help warm bottles is an added bonus for him!

The bottle warmer was actually first used by my mom though. Grandma (gra-ma as the kids say) had a full day of bottle feeding recently and gave this a try. I was able to explain to her how to use in just a few minutes. In my error, I forgot to tell her that it does take 15-20 minutes to warm up. So that is something to keep in mind. It didn’t help that “little dude” woke up early from his morning nap, she did resort to warm water bottle warm up since he was demanding a bottle right then. For the next feeding the warmer was in prime condition though. She said it worked great. She noted she got worried it might be too warm so she checked the milk for her own comfort and found it be at a very good temperature. “Little dude” got going on one bottle for her when she had the warmer on and drank 4 ounces all at once. She said she didn’t realize he had that much because she couldn’t see the bottle. He apparently had a good latch and was very happy with milk temperature to keep at it so it was all good. The warmer was warm for over 8 hours! For us, that means we can warm up several bottles with the same warmer which is even better for being on the go!

Overall, we are very pleased with the On the Fly bottle warmer product. I would have to say their slogan, “A Simply Chic Bottle Warmer“, is very appropriate. Who wouldn’t think a cow print bottle sleeve isn’t chic?!
So for us, this is already packed in the diaper bag for when it is needed while out of the house. I would definitely recommend it to any breastfeeding mom who’s baby is on the go and has that need for a nice warm bottle when you aren’t around! The On the Fly Small Starter Kit is only $30 and the On the Fly Large Starter Kit is $35. Both a great value for the extended usage of the warmers!

If this sounds like a product you would use, if you have a response to this review, or are hoping to see this as a giveaway at some point, let me know by leaving me a comment!

Lansinoh Review Continued in a Giveaway!

** This giveaway has ENDED! Thanks for entering!!! **

As I said in my review of Lansinoh …

I use several Lansinoh products on a regular basis when I am breastfeeding. I
will be up front from a budget stand point that Lansinoh products are more
expensive than most other brands of the same products. So why do I use them?
The quality is better and I have found that to be worth the price!

And why is this a budget friendly item? I answered that in my review too.

My budget saving tip … shop for Lansinoh products when they are on sale. I
have found that Target and Babies ‘R Us put them on sale on a semi-regular
basis. You have to look for the sales and be patient since they don’t happen all
of the time. The sales are minimal in that they are only 10-15% off but an extra
off is savings for you and money that stays in your pocket! So when I see the
sales, I stock up. These items don’t expire so I just make room under my
bathroom sink or in my bottle cupboard in the kitchen for extra boxes!

Lansinoh has generously offered to give one of blog readers one of my favorites from their product line … a box of Disposable Nursing Pads!

This drawing will end Sunday, August 30th at midnight EST. I will pick a winner using Random.org. The winner will have 48 hours to reply with their address. You must include your email address in your comment or have it in your profile so you can be contacted if you are a winner! Please make sure I can see your email address!!! There are LOTS of extra entries so make sure to use them all! You must complete the Mandatory Entry for the additional entries to count.
