Furniture bargains in 2013

The kids have left felt tip marks on the dining room table. Meanwhile, the cats have mistaken your sofa for a scratching post. Maybe it’s time for a bit of furniture shopping and, thanks to the early 2013 sales, now could be the perfect time to do it.

The prospect of buying large pieces of furniture can appear daunting no matter how much of a bargain’s on offer. Here are some tips to help you choose the right piece of furniture for your home:

Know what you’re looking for

Ever been out looking for a bedside table in the sales only to come home with a mirror and a pot plant? Make sure you know what you want before you go so you don’t get sidetracked from your mission. To save agonising for hours over the Nordic-style oak sideboard or a sleek black lacquered version, get a sense of the style of piece you’re looking for too.

Measure up

Know the importance of being careful with your measurements. Yes, that large sofa may fit in theory, but if it completely dominates the space, you could end up hating it no matter how much of a bargain it was. One way to get a feel of how it fits before you buy is to cut out pieces of paper from measurements to make a template of the item in question. This will help you get an idea of how much space it takes up and you may be able to try out a few seating arrangements without the heavy lifting.

Choose furniture that works twice as hard

Consider items with extra, hidden storage inside such as coffee tables with shelves or beds with drawers underneath. If your bargain hunting turns up any modular pieces, nab them quickly! These can be moved around to suit your changing lifestyle, giving you furniture that can last for years to come.

Are you sitting comfortably?

Yes, it may well be cheaper to buy large pieces online but, with such a big investment, it’s worthwhile to take it for a test drive. This will allow you to assess the colour and quality. If it’s a sofa, take another person with you to see what it’s like with two people sitting on it.

Flat pack or ready-made…

…that depends on your capabilities with the electric screwdriver. Flat pack furniture may take an afternoon to put together, but it can be much cheaper. Plus, you’re usually able to take it away straight from the shop. But if you know that putting up wardrobes with your nearest and dearest is the fastest way to start a huge row, ready-assembled could be for the best.

Essential checks

Whether you’ve saved up or taken out a loan to cover the initial outlay, buying large pieces of furniture – even if they’re on sale – is still a major expense. The process requires some careful consideration, and it pays to double-check the quality of the service you’re receiving. While you’re in the shop, ask about details such as guarantees and delivery times; with many people buying sofas in early 2013 you may be waiting longer than you’d planned.

If you’re buying anything wooden like a chest of drawers, make sure you open up one of the drawers to check how they’re hanging and to look at the quality of the wood inside- a real giveaway. With sofas, ask whether they’re made of hardwood or soft (hardwood is better) and actually pick up a sofa cushion as normally the heavier they are, the better the quality.

Buying a New Home

Are you a proud apartment dweller?  Have you maintained a steady job for a couple of years now?  Looking to move anytime soon?  Looking to settle down?  If you are currently renting a place but you have a steady and are looking to settle down, now may be a great time for you to start looking into buying a new home.

It’s a great time to be buying a new home

To be honest, even if you currently own a home, but are looking to move, you may look at buying a new home right away.  In most of the country, even though the housing market is showing some signs of rebounding, housing prices are still greatly depressed from what they once were.  On top of that, mortgage rates are at historic lows.  Did you know that, on a 30-year $300,000 loan, one-quarter of one percent could be more than $35 a month or $420 a year.  Tack that up to a full percentage point and you are looking at almost $150 a month or over $1700 a year.  That’s another whole mortgage payment each year!!  If you buy while rates are low, you can just go ahead and apply that savings directly to your mortgage.  By applying just one extra mortgage payment each year, you can take around 6 year off of your mortgage and save tens of thousands of dollars in interest payments.

Buying a new home can pay for itself

Trust me when I say that buying a new home can pay for itself over renting, particularly if you are able to get a fixed rate mortgage.  If you are able to do that, your monthly cost for shelter never goes up.  Rent, on the other hand, will definitely go up each and every year.  If you are staying in an area for more than 5 years, buying a new home will likely save you money in the long run.  If you are still on the fence about it, take a look at “Is It Better to Buy or Rent?” on the New York Times site.  Enter in numbers appropriate for your area and see how long it takes for buying a new home to cover the cost of renting.

If you are considering buying a new home, make sure that you are careful with your personal information.  We’ll have more about that next month, but, in the meantime, check out Lifelock for

The Folded Napkin

This is post will feature The Folded Napkin, the fourth of five finds that we will feature from the DC Metro Cooking Show back in November! Watch this week for ALL of these finds as they might make a great Valentine’s gift for your love or even your kids … or maybe a teacher … or even yourself!

Details …

The Folded Napkin offers three napkin sizes … full size napkins, appkins, and snapkins! The napkins are double sided with a different fabric on the front and back. Even the elegant prints have bright crisp colors! The fun prints are full of color and match not on your personality but your interests and decorating style!

Our Thoughts …

The Folded Napkin provided us with their Snapkins to review. We LOVE these cloth napkins. We have some cloth napkins but kids struggled with them because of the size of them. These are the perfect size for the kids. Brian and I did fine with the smaller napkin size too. The kids love the colors and patterns for the Snapkins! They are bright and chearful and well we can always use that at dinner time.

We love cloth napkins because they are a budget saver. Have you ever calculated what you spend on napkins you throw away at every meal? It adds up! I am hoping to start putting these in lunch boxes soon but I am not trusting enough for that yet … maybe next school year? We will see if we can make that transition!

We asked the kids to show off their napkins for pictures and here are the results.

The girls with their matching napkins …

Matthew was a tad confused and was wearing his as a hat … maybe it will keep him from whipping his hands on his shirt?! A mommy can hope, right?

What do you think of this small cloth napkin? Does your family use cloth napkins? Leave us a comment and let us know!

Sparkling Clean in 2013 with Cascade!

We recently had the opportunity to try Cascade Complete Pacs! You might have caught on that Brian does a lot of cooking around here. That means that I do a lot of dishes. (Brian does do dishes too so don’t think he is a bum!) Since we eat at home … well all of the time, we have a lot of dishes. On the weekends, you will sometimes find us running the dishwasher twice a day. It isn’t that we have a small dishwasher but we have a lot of dishes when you think about meal preparations plus serving and then five people eating! We are best friends with our dishwasher to say the least! On leftover nights and trash nights the dishwasher is definitely packed to the brim! I like to see how much I can fit in the puzzle of limited space and Brian likes to complain that I don’t scrub every particle of food off the dishes in the dishwasher.

All of that dish washing means that we go through a lot dishwasher soap. The current bottle (of Cascade) is from Sam’s Club so it is HUGE! I have already asked Brian to not buy it again because I can’t get the child proof lid off while holding the huge bottle. I have to set it on the counter to use both hands to open the bottle! When I was trying the Cascade Complete Pacs, I was so happy I could just grab and put it in the little spot in our dishwasher, close the soap area, and start the dishwasher. I saved myself several steps which to me is a few extra minutes where many I can do something for me. Not that I would have any idea what to do at this point but I am sure I could grab my Kindle and read a few pages of that book I downloaded but haven’t even started yet! What would you do with a few extra minutes?

Head over and Like Cascade on Facebook to work towards making your dishes sparking clean in 2013!

What will help you have a sparking clean 2013? What would you do extra time if you used Cascade Complete Pacs? Leave us a comment and let us know!

WhitePages.com Rescues Christmas Cards

Are you getting ready to send out Christmas Cards to family and friends? I often know that family and friends have moved but I often fail to ask for their new address. It is a bad habit. This leaves me addressing my cards and not having addresses. Some friends I track down by text or Facebook but others I only have emails or addresses for so I often turn to WhitePages.com to quickly look up their address. What do you do when you are without an address you need?

There is also a feature at WhitePages.com that I just learned about. I think I may work on replacing the dozen pieces of paper that have my address lists on them right now with this service …

WhitePages Mailer helps busy people create a master address list for holiday cards, birthday invites, thank you notes, “Save the Date” cards and more by linking your contacts or Facebook friends to their mailing addresses. Plus, you can export the addresses to a spreadsheet or Avery mailing labels

That is just perfect for me and my lack of organized list. I admit it used to be organized in an Excel spreadsheet at one point but that was like three computers ago and well yeah, you know what happens when you move over to a new computer!

WhitePages wants to help you with your holiday mailing efforts by offering one of our readers a $25 gift code to Shutterfly. This giveaway will end after Christmas but maybe you can order Thank You cards or New Year’s cards or you can order me birthday cards for my birthday in February … just an idea there! ;)

Seagate Slim 500GB Portable Hard Drive Review

Recently, we posted about the importance of security software on your computer.  To keep your computer safe, as well as all of the information contained in it, it is just as important to regularly back up your hard drive.  Security software helps to protect against malware, hackers, etc., but by their very nature, they are always going to be one step behind.  That software also doesn’t protect you from storms, floods, power outages or anything else that might destroy your computer.  That’s why we jumped at the chance to review the Seagate Slim portable hard drive.

A few weeks ago, during one of the storms, we did everything right.  We closed everything and shut down the computer.  We didn’t think to unplug the cord from the surge protector (isn’t that what it is there for?).  When we went down to reboot, the darned computer wouldn’t turn on.  It was pretty scary to think about all that could have been lost.  As it turns out, we were lucky that it was only the power supply that was fried.  We had a local company install a new one and everything turned back on easily with no loss of information.

We were just so unsure about what could have been lost.  Having to buy a new computer would have hurt the pocket book, but how many documents, pictures, programs, etc. would have been lost.  In a day in which so many of our documents and memories are stored digitally, it’s a big deal to make sure that we have it all backed up.  One way that many people back up this information is on CD’s or DVD’s.  Unfortunately for us, our main computers have largely been laptops and the CD/DVD drives for our laptops have been notoriously short-lived.

That’s why we loved the opportunity to take a look at the Seagate Slim 500 GB Portable Hard Drive. It’s a USB-connected drive so it connect easily and it’s ridiculously small and compact.  It’s smaller than my wallet!

Here are the details:

The Seagate Slim portable drive delivers easy-to-use, highly flexible protection for your files. This pencil-thin drive also works seamlessly with your social media accounts so it’s simple to back up and share your online photos, movies, and more.

Introducing NEW Purex plus Oxi

Details …

Purex® plus Oxi is so powerful, it works against over 101 different stains!

The three stain-fighting enzymes in Purex plus Oxi each work against different types of stains for the most Purex stain-fighting power you can get.

What scents are available?

  • Fresh Morning Burst
Plus it works in regular and HE machines!!

My Thoughts …

I am pretty picky about detergent. I honestly wasn’t sure of this new Purex for two reasons … one the dye and two the fragrance. I am a bit of a fragrance snob when it comes to laundry products and openly admit that I love non-smelly products the best. The Oxi part of this new Purex though almost makes up for the two cons I found in the product. I do wish they had a dye free and and a fragrance free version though. Maybe soon? I can hope as I do love the budget friendly price of Purex products.

Want to try the NEW Purex plus Oxi yourself? I am excited to have three free product coupons to give to our readers. Good luck!!

Is your Toilet Dangerous?

When we first saw this information, we were unsure about why anyone would have an exploding or dangerous toilet. But then we learned, the issue is the  Flushmate pressure-assist flushing system that is mostly found in toilets sold in home improvement stores. But the infographic says it  all …

Sending Your Home On Vacation

These days, people don’t have a whole lot of extra money to go on big trips to exciting locales. With the way the economy has been performing, most people need to save up for a few years in
between larger trips. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t chomping at the bit to shake things up, though.

One way that people are starting to accomplish this is by furnishing their homes in a way that makes everything feel new and exciting. While this is not necessarily “better” than going on an
actual trip, it can make the time in between your trips much more exciting.

Start Small

The best way to get started with something like this is to decide what type of mood and feel you’re going for. Some vacation spots are almost impossible to recreate at your own home, so it’s
smart to start small if you can.

It’s also smart to pick an ambiance that is geared more toward vacations where the place you’re staying is truly unique. For example, recreating a trip to Miami Beach may not work out so well
because most hotel rooms look more or less the same. However, recreating a trip to a cabin in the Rocky Mountains could lead to some great results. After all, Rocky Mountain cabin décor can be
easily reproduced and can have a great impact.

Go for Broke

Sure, you may be “recreating” a vacation spot because you don’t have the money to actually go to there right now. This doesn’t mean that you have to settle for sub-par furnishings or decor
while you’re doing it. The decor is really what’s going to sell this whole experience for you, so it doesn’t make sense to be stingy on the decor. After all, you don’t want to spend money on all of
this stuff if it’s not even going to give you the look and feel you want it to.

Have Fun

In the end, the whole point of recreating these trips is to have a good time and take a step outside of the ordinary. Not only can this be fun, but it can also be a great way to relax and unwind. Life
can get a little monotonous at times. When you can’t make it out to the rocky mountains, think about how you can bring the Rocky Mountains to you.
