Easy Ways to Save Using the Internet

We use the internet for all sorts of things including shopping (price comparisons) and purchasing. The World Wide Web is chock-full of money saving opportunities right there at your fingertips at any time of night or day. You do not need to wait for the Sunday paper or the next round of advertisements and junk mail, instead you can hop on any computer or smart device right now!

It’s easy and there’s no big secret, but many people still don’t know how many ways they can save or even what to look for.  Here are just a few ways to save using the Internet…

shopping-onlineNot So Extreme Couponing

Grocery stores rolled out their club cards years ago and as they data mine your digits they discount your ding dongs. Fair trade for most, but the new thing with grocery stores is their online coupons. You can log-in to their website and choose which coupons you want to use and they automatically load them onto your stores club card. When you check out and slide your card the coupon savings will automatically be calculated and removed from your total.

No more clipping coupons and trying to keep them organized. Nice!

Promo and Coupon Codes For Everything!

Have you noticed the little promo code box when you are ordering things online? It is quite amazing how wide a variety of products and services you can save money on just by seeking out and using promo or coupon codes. Whether you are looking for a Crate and Barrel coupon code or a rental car promo, you can save a ton of money looking for offers online, but you do need to look for them. Not everything comes to you automatically wrapped in a Groupon. Small businesses are looking for more and more ways to reach you and promo codes are hot right not.

Shipping Vs. Delivery Charges

For large item purchases ordered online, shipping can often be less expensive than if you were to make your purchase on-site and have it delivered. Another thing to consider, if you purchase a sofa at a furniture store and they do not carry it in stock they have to order it anyway. If you make the same purchase online, chances are you will get it much faster.

In addition – depending on the bulk of your online purchases in general, you can sometimes negotiate free shipping across the board. This comes in handy when you are doing holiday shopping for a lot of people. You can also have items sent directly to the receiver’s home versus have the additional cost of re-mailing it to them.

Saving Time & Gas Counts Too

The ease and speed with which you can find discounts or perks and make purchases online is incredible, but we often overlook how much time it saves us as well. You can get information on airports or flights, traffic updates, road closures and so much more which allows you to avoid things that cost you time. This kind of information is valuable.

In addition, think of the fuel savings you will rack up on when you don’t have to drive everywhere or get caught up and delayed in traffic.

Every dollar saved is another dollar towards tackling your bucket list or adding to the college fund. Make your every dollar count!

Shopping Therapy or Baking Therapy

These are two types of therapy I love. I will be the first to admit the shopping therapy rarely happens though … you know this whole life on a budget thing plus a job and family that keeps me busy. Baking Therapy on the other hand, I seem to find time for that. Some times it is after the kids go to bed and I bake just for the sake of baking. That is tonight. I printed out two recipes and didn’t have the ingredients for them. I search through my Pinterest Cakes Board and couldn’t find a recipe I wanted to make that I had the ingredients for there either.  I needed to bake so I kept looking and ended up on my Pinterest Cookie Board. I found the recipe for Skillet Baked Candy Bar Stuffed Double Cookie so I used that for my inspiration.  don’t need to eat the cookies … sure I will eat one or two but the baking is the therapy not the eating for me. I think it is the measuring and mixing and creating that I love. So …. Ta-Da …

Cookie Surprise Sundae

OK I was ready to take the picture and Brian (This Cookin’ Dad took over and styled that picture. What do you think?)

Want to make your own Cookie Surprise Sundae?

I totally cheated.

Ingredients

2 rolls of Sugar Cookie dough

1/2 roll of Chocolate Chip Cookie dough (or use the full thing!)

approximately 12 piece of candy (we used Reese cups, Twix, Snickers, Kit Kat bars that were left over from gosh knows what candy collecting event the kids attended … the Christmas parade maybe?)

Directions

Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray your cast iron skillet with a cooking spray. Press one package of sugar dough into the skillet. Place candies on top and add the chocolate chip cookie dough to the middle of the candies. Cover the top with sugar cookie dough. Bake for 35-45 minutes. I baked it for 35 minutes and it is gooey so if you like gooey for the lesser time!

Flip it out of the skillet onto a cutting board. Cut into pieces with a pizza cutter. Top with ice cream and chocolate syrup. Enjoy!

I don’t need to eat the cookies … sure I will eat one or two but the baking is the therapy not the eating for me. I think it is the measuring and mixing and creating that I love. Well, I don’t even need to measure or mix apparently. I can just create and be happy but apparently I need to go shopping so that I can make those recipes I printed out today!

How about you? Do you like shopping therapy or baking therapy? Well you can either go shop for shoes or go buy baking supplies because Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland is offering one of our readers a $50 Visa gift card.  Good luck in the giveaway!

Furniture bargains in 2013

The kids have left felt tip marks on the dining room table. Meanwhile, the cats have mistaken your sofa for a scratching post. Maybe it’s time for a bit of furniture shopping and, thanks to the early 2013 sales, now could be the perfect time to do it.

The prospect of buying large pieces of furniture can appear daunting no matter how much of a bargain’s on offer. Here are some tips to help you choose the right piece of furniture for your home:

Know what you’re looking for

Ever been out looking for a bedside table in the sales only to come home with a mirror and a pot plant? Make sure you know what you want before you go so you don’t get sidetracked from your mission. To save agonising for hours over the Nordic-style oak sideboard or a sleek black lacquered version, get a sense of the style of piece you’re looking for too.

Measure up

Know the importance of being careful with your measurements. Yes, that large sofa may fit in theory, but if it completely dominates the space, you could end up hating it no matter how much of a bargain it was. One way to get a feel of how it fits before you buy is to cut out pieces of paper from measurements to make a template of the item in question. This will help you get an idea of how much space it takes up and you may be able to try out a few seating arrangements without the heavy lifting.

Choose furniture that works twice as hard

Consider items with extra, hidden storage inside such as coffee tables with shelves or beds with drawers underneath. If your bargain hunting turns up any modular pieces, nab them quickly! These can be moved around to suit your changing lifestyle, giving you furniture that can last for years to come.

Are you sitting comfortably?

Yes, it may well be cheaper to buy large pieces online but, with such a big investment, it’s worthwhile to take it for a test drive. This will allow you to assess the colour and quality. If it’s a sofa, take another person with you to see what it’s like with two people sitting on it.

Flat pack or ready-made…

…that depends on your capabilities with the electric screwdriver. Flat pack furniture may take an afternoon to put together, but it can be much cheaper. Plus, you’re usually able to take it away straight from the shop. But if you know that putting up wardrobes with your nearest and dearest is the fastest way to start a huge row, ready-assembled could be for the best.

Essential checks

Whether you’ve saved up or taken out a loan to cover the initial outlay, buying large pieces of furniture – even if they’re on sale – is still a major expense. The process requires some careful consideration, and it pays to double-check the quality of the service you’re receiving. While you’re in the shop, ask about details such as guarantees and delivery times; with many people buying sofas in early 2013 you may be waiting longer than you’d planned.

If you’re buying anything wooden like a chest of drawers, make sure you open up one of the drawers to check how they’re hanging and to look at the quality of the wood inside- a real giveaway. With sofas, ask whether they’re made of hardwood or soft (hardwood is better) and actually pick up a sofa cushion as normally the heavier they are, the better the quality.

Shopping at ALDI for the Holidays

We are excited to share a recent shopping experience at ALDI during this holiday season!

The ALDI store has been helping shoppers get ready for the holiday season with their wonderful selection of holiday and seasonal items.

I took advantage of a recent trip to ALDI’s to get ready for the holidays and make food gifts for friends and neighbors. I have an ALDI store close and go past frequently. ALDI  has become my store for a quick stop for basic needs. I have found their prices to always be below the other stores in the area. The store brands are very comparable to name brand items found in other stores nearby. The cake mixes are perfect for my special coffee cakes that were given to many neighbors & friends.

Here was my shopping cart at the end of my recent trip …

Having an ALDI store to stretch my shopping dollars further helps me keep the tradition of making my homemade gifts during the holiday season. I used the cream cheese and shredded cheese for my homemade cheese balls which are another homemade gift I love to give. Ta-da!

A tip from ALDI for the holiday season …

Spreading Holiday Cheer. Looking for the perfect party favor or hostess gift? Layer the ingredients for your favorite family cookie recipes – like Baker’s Corner Baking Sprinkles, Coconut Flakes or Baking Cocoa from ALDI – in mason jars to make “cookies in a jar.” Or, make mini loaves of the Baker’s Corner Pumpkin Quick Bread Mix and wrap them each in a small clear bag tied with a seasonal ribbon. Another easy way to extend holiday cheer is to pack up leftovers for your guests to enjoy the next day.

Check out ALDI’s website to keep up with their latest specials!

Do you shop at ALDI? What is your favorite part of shopping at ALDI? Leave us a comment and let us know!

NOTE: “I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for ALDI. I received a gift certificate to facilitate my review as well as a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

The Black Friday Money Mindset

We are excited to bring a guest post to you today from Steve Siebold!

Just after Thanksgiving comes another American tradition: Black Friday. Millions of people will lineup at retail stores all across the country in hopes of scoring some great deals on merchandise, everything from games and toys to jewelry, electronics, clothing and more.

Unfortunately, another tradition, not as exciting for the Black Friday diehards is that of debt.  While most stores advertise huge savings on hot ticket items, most people fail to recognize the “Black Friday Money Trap” they are stepping into. Just how bad is it?  Last year, American’s spent a whopping $52 Billion.

The core of the problem is that middle Class America is notorious for living beyond its means, especially on Black Friday. People are brainwashed about how much money they are supposedly saving on Black Friday, and they end up buying way more than they would any other day during the year.  In fact, Black Friday leads many people to financial devastation.

The statistics back it up: In 2010, the census bureau reported that total credit card debt in the United States was $886 billion. On Black Friday, either the consumer racks up even more credit card debt than they already have, or they pay cash but spend so much that they don’t have enough left to pay their mortgage, car payments and other essentials.

But there’s some good news for all the Black Friday fanatics out there: you can still enjoy your day of shopping without breaking the bank. The key is mental toughness.

Here are some tips to keep your money mindset in check:

  • Ask yourself if you would rather have the short-term satisfaction of expensive material possessions, or the long-term results of financial freedom and abundance?
  • Don’t fall for marketing campaigns that make you feel as if you’re getting a great deal when you’re really not (i.e. buy it today – pay for it tomorrow)
  • Allocate a certain amount of money for each person you plan on buying gifts for and don’t overspend by even a dollar.
  • Define your budget prior to Black Friday. Know how much money you need to pay your living expenses for the month, how much you need to put into savings, and figure out a comfortable amount you have leftover that’s just there and can be used for shopping at the holidays.
  • Don’t even think of using a credit card unless you are 100% sure you can comfortably pay it off at the end of the month.
  • Don’t get caught up in the moment.  If your shopping cart is overflowing, step back, regroup and make sure you can really afford everything you plan to purchase.
  • Kids learn by example.  Even parents who have failed to reach their financial dreams can still teach their kids important lessons about money during the holiday season.
  • There’s no shame in telling people that this year will be a lean holiday season when it comes to exchanging gifts.
  • There are good deals to be had on Black Friday, but be mentally tough to know when enough is enough.

The bottom line when it comes to money on Black Friday: put your emotions on the shelf and let reason be your guide. By all means go out and enjoy getting those doorbuster deals, but be smart and mentally tough about it, and don’t spend more money than you have.

Steve Siebold is author of the book How Rich People Think, which hit # 31 on Amazon.com this yearHe spent the last 30 years interviewing some of the world’s richest people to get inside their heads to see how they really think about money.  He discovered 100 differences in thinking between the middle class and wealthy that are extreme.  For more information and to download five free chapters, visit www.howrichpeoplethinkbook.com

Shopping Online Safely During the Holidays

It’s getting to be that time of year.  I love the holidays.  It’s a great time to spend with family, to reconnect with old friends, and to eat plenty of yummy comforting food!  It’s also a great time to score some great deals by shopping online.  You could stand in line for hours to find that one perfect gift or you can search the web and have it in no time, often at a great discount.  We have bought toys for the kids, games, power tools, and more than our fair share of clothes.

Of course, there are dangers to shopping online.  If you are shopping online, try to keep in mind these three tips.

  • When you are shopping online, do it at home and not in a public space.  Public computers are rarely secure.  People can tamper with them or even just watch your keystrokes as you enter your personal information.
  • You definitely have to make sure that you are shopping at reputable sites.  If you think to yourself, “I’ve never heard of this place before, let me check it out,” just go ahead and step away from your computer for a few hours to cool down.
  • When you are checking out, look for the “s” in https://.  The “s” stands for Secure!  This assures you that your personal information will be safe and not shared with anyone.

None of these are guarantees that your information will not be stolen.  Hackers attack store databases all the time.  These tips will, however, help reduce the likelihood that someone else will spend your money for you. In addition to protecting you from identity theft, LifeLock.org has some great tips about how to shop safely online!

If you are interested in finding more tips to keep your personal information safe, check out the LifeLock for Life Game app on LifeLock’s Facebook site.  You can also join the LifeLock Black Friday Twitter Party on November 23 at 6 pm EST to discuss safe shopping online and have a chance to win a $400 Best Buy gift card.  See below for more details and to sign up for the party.  We’ll see you there!

Walmart HP XL Ink Shopping Haul

I love Walmart.  If you love Walmart too, just go ahead and raise your hand.  It’s ok, no one’s watching.  Go ahead and raise your hand.  Recently, MomSelect sent us a $75 gift card and challenged us to see what all we could get with it at Walmart.  Here was the catch:  we had to make sure to purchase an HP XL ink cartridge.  Well, I went a little over, but here’s a picture of my haul.

Walmart HP Haul

I love shopping at Walmart because it’s pretty much one-stop shopping.  I went in with a specific list, but that rarely holds, especially when I’m walking around with my little man in tow.  Besides the ink, my list included diapers, a ladle, toothpaste, sub rolls, and some shelving to address some of the storage issues that we have in our kitchen.  There are very few places in our area where you can get bread, ink, toothpaste, and storage solutions all in the same spot.  The videos in the picture started as a treat for my little guy, but turned into a treat for the girls as well.  They were in the electronics section near the ink.  That dinosaur movie has been watched at least 4 times a day for the past 4 days.  Worth the price, I guess.  What you don’t see in this picture is a box of dinosaur cookies that Matthew claimed when we were getting bread in the bakery section.  Again, proximity worked against me on this, but my boy was super happy!

The HP XL ink was the most expensive single item.  I bought the HP 60XL color ink cartridge.  Had I bought one of the color cartridges and one of the black and white cartridges, I would have completed my $75 challenge right there.  The price at Walmart is comparable to so many online distributors, but without the shipping costs involved.  Not a bad deal.  Plus, you can even purchase them at Walmart.com/HPink and pick it up free at your local Walmart.  On top of that, the XL cartridges are a huge savings on their own.  XL does not refer to the size of the cartridge, it refers to the amount of ink in the cartridge.  Did you know that you can save as much as 40% by using the XL cartridges as compared to the regular HP cartridges?  Extra bonus…when I went to check out, the ink purchase actually got me an extra $10 Walmart gift card for a later purchase!  How great is that?

We are excited to offer one of our reader a $20 Gift Card! What would you print with HP XL Ink? Good Luck in the giveaway!
