Black Friday Tips Giveaway

In case you are hiding under a rock, Black Friday is coming up!  We asked in 2009, What is your Black Friday plan of attack? In that post, I offered up one of my favorite Black Friday tips.

My favorite tip … take some food with you. You will get hungry and you will over spend on coffee from Starbucks or bottle water and candy at the Best Buy line. Shove some candy in your pocket and a bottle of water in your bag and then head out on Black Friday.

The most obvious tip is to plan your trip out! Use the Black Friday ads … I go for both the online early released ones and the day of ones because I love the real ads! You might also check out this Black Friday Preparedness Guide!

We are excited to offer our a readers a $50 gift card to do some online Black Friday shopping! You can pick from iTunes, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy or Target!

Friday Favorites: End of Summer Sales

Friday Favorites is another almost weekly feature here at Simply Budgeted.  The whole point of this feature is to share some of our favorite finds.  Anything is game. Food. Cleaning supplies. Kid stuff. Garden favorites. Recipes. Anything that I really like and want to randomly  post about. Reminder/Disclaimer/Whatever: Everything in Friday Favorites is something that we use and bought on our own.

Up this week …

 End of Summer Sales

Maybe this is a tip or a deal or … I don’t know. I am going with a Friday Favorite. I ran into Harris Teeter earlier this week to get lemonade and tea for a lunch at the office. As I walked in the door, I walked in the 75% off summer clearance items they had set-up at the door. uh-oh. I always get in trouble at the end of season sales at Harris Teeter. Why? Because they have stuff I would NEVER buy at a grocery store super cheap. Part of end of seasons sales is thinking about who has seasonal items and that isn’t their main seller. For example, all of our coolers are from CVS end of summer sales. All of them. My little two chair with a table set on the patio set was an end of summer sale at Home Depot (we totally went there for paint that day!) So keep your eyes open at the grocery stores and drug stores or little shops in town. They want the summer stuff out so they can get their fall stuff in stock!

What did I score? Most of it is in the picture above …

3 kid sized neck pillows … these are for our trip to the beach the end of this month. Perfect! ($3.25 each instead of $12.99!!)
2 pack of tank tops for me for our beach trip ($3.75 instead of $14.99!)
Pajama set with tank top and capris for me for our beach trip ($3.75 instead of $14.99!)
2 Clear Cups with straws – one for my work desk, one for home ($2.25 each instead of $8.99)
2 Can Coozies for my parents (They had these EXACT ones when I was a kid so it is a joke item more than anything) ($1.25 each instead of $3.99!)
Missing from the picture: Box of Hickory Woodchips for Brians’ new-to-him smoker ($2.25 instead of $8.99!)

Total spent with tax: $27.83
Total SAVED: $79.40

So yes, I can now claim I bought pajamas at the grocery store and well that makes the whole trip worth it right there! =P The bad or good news is that we are headed to Harris Teeter tonight for our grocery shopping trip so I am plotting what I might get for upcoming presents if they still have stuff there … hmmmm. If anyone gets summer pajamas for Christmas, they know where they came from! haha

Getting the Best Deals

Getting the best deals from the brands your family loves … how do you that today? I can let you in on a few of my tips for making your grocery and basic needs trips easier on your budget.

I talked to a co-worker about this recently so these are the tips I gave her.
1) Watch for sales. Simple, right? I am amazed at how many folks don’t do this though! Amazed at how many folks pay full price for a box of cereal because they ran out and didn’t buy three boxes when it was on sale. The typical sale cycle is six weeks so get enough or close to enough to last your family that six weeks.

2) Match your coupons with the sales. I do this a lot but focus on key items we use like diapers, cereal, and frozen veggies. It is a lot easier on my budget to stock up on diapers at $5 a package than to pay $9-10 a package at their regular price. I will get at least a month of diapers if not two months at a time. Plus this limits my trips to the store. Any week that I can skip a trip to the store saves me money in our budget. Something to think about there.

3) Be flexible in your brands you buy. I found this out with toilet paper. While my husband has a brand he loves, we don’t have to buy that every single time. Especially with little kids that go to the bathroom all of the time. So I buy what I can when it is on sale with coupons. I did learn that I am not happy with saving a few extra dollars on my laundry soap. So I do major stocks up on it when it goes buy one, get one free and they often have coupons.

4) Find a store that works for your shopping style. You don’t have to go to five stores a week. We hit up two most weeks. Every once and awhile I will hit up a different grocery store but I will trade it out for my other grocery store, not add it in my shopping.

So how do you make your shopping trips a success and not a challenge? Do you use these same tips or do you have your own? Let me know as I love to get ideas from you as we can all learn from each other on how to make our budgets work with the brands we love!
