More March Snow in Virginia

We had more snow Sunday night into Monday. It is mostly gone now. You can still see it high up in the mountains which is beautiful. One day I will have the opportunity to get pictures of the views we see daily around here. Until then, you are stuck with views of our yard … which is still beautiful.

So this picture was sent to my mom to show her the snow was sticking the road … again. The farmer in his big ole John Deer tractor had plowed our street once that morning.

This picture was out back and I sent this one to my mom too. I asked her if I had moved to Ohio and hadn’t noticed.

March Snow in Virginia

We grew up going to Ohio every Christmas to visit family. As kids we LOVED to find snow in Ohio as we didn’t get that much snow here in Virginia.  Maybe you caught snow post one and snow post two here this month. Three snows that closed schools in March is a big deal around here. We often get snows in March but normally it is one … I think maybe winter is done now. Maybe?

I do have to say for the first time EVER I feel like the kids snow boots had some actual use in the winter time!

Are you enjoy the late Winter or are you ready for Spring? Leave me a vote and let me know!

Another March Snow for Virginia

We woke up on Monday to MORE snow! More … in March. We only had a few inches here at our house that morning and then it rained all day. So the kids did not play in the snow that day. I did snap a few pictures when I went out to thaw the car out to drive to work.

Here were my daffodils peaking out from the snow … they are happy now so I think they will make a nice bloom this spring!

I love our blue house in the snow. It was a huge debate a few years ago what color to paint our house. Our house was grey in color before so blue was change. We have the only blue house on the street but it does look so pretty in our country neighborhood.

I just saw a forecast for the weekend that said there maybe more snow in Virginia on Sunday. March snows aren’t odd here in Virginia but normally it is one March snow and we are done for the winter. I guess we will see if I have more snow pictures to post next week.

Are you ready for daffodils and spring or are you enjoying the last bit of winter? Leave us a comment and let us know.

Happy first day of Spring!

A Virginia Snow Day – January 2013

All of the kids didn’t have school today … we actually had snow this was a big fun Snow Day! We had between 2-3 inches of snow … and yes that is enough to cancel school here!

This didn’t do much good for Brian’s to-do list. I decided to not chance the still snow covered roads this morning and stayed home too. I took a morning break to go outside with everyone to play in the snow. The best part of the snow playing was that for the first time in six years, none of the kids screams at being out in the snow! YAY!!!

Here is the snow adventure in pictures …

Our backyard … do you see our dog in the picture? ;)

Don’t all kids play on the playground in the snow?!

Hot Air Balloon Ride over Virginia

My sister took all of these pictures except for the last one that some stranger took and emailed to her when they landed. Her dear husband bought her a hot air balloon ride for her birthday … her dear husband that is scared of heights. She was so excited! I love the picture that shows the trees in full color here in Virginia.  The picture looking up at the balloon is a favorite too! If anyone is wondering, they did this ride with balloonsovervirginia.com. Which picture is your favorite?

Pumpkin Patch Visit 2012: Miller Farms Market

We took time earlier this month to visit our favorite pumpkin patch here in Central Virginia. We headed to Miller Farms Market in Orange, VA. It is a drive for us but they only charge you for your pumpkins. A lot places around here charge admission fees and even hayride fees. With a family of five, those fees add up so we hope to be spending our money at Millers Farms Market for years to come!

We got our carving pumpkins and my baking pumpkins here. Hopefully by mid-November I will find time to process my Long Island Cheese and Peanut pumpkins for Miller Farms Market. I can taste how yummy they are already! For now, here are pictures from our trip to the pumpkin patch …

This was one of my favorite pictures. My boys out in the middle of the HUGE pumpkin patch!

Did you get to visit a pumpkin patch this fall? Leave us a comment and let us know. Happy Halloween to your family from ours!

Friday Favorite: Bold Rock Virginia Draft Hard Cider

I admit that hard cider is one of my favorite parts of fall and I was happy to discover a new (to us), local hard cider this year! I know hard cider isn’t just for fall but it is a nice fall treat.

Bold Rock Hard Cider  describes the Virginia Draft as a smooth and distinctively hard cider that has supurb drinkability making it perfect anytime anywhere.

Some hard ciders have a rough after taste but this hard is so smooth. It is so smooth that you might forget that you are drinking a hard cider not a regular cider. I can tell you that we will be buying this cider again and I hope to find the Bold Rock Virginia Apple hard cider soon. As always, please drink responsibility!

What is Friday Favorites?

Friday Favorites is another almost weekly feature here at Simply Budgeted. The whole point of this feature is to share some of our favorite finds. Anything is game. Food. Cleaning supplies. Kid stuff. Garden favorites. Recipes. Anything that I really like and want to randomly post about.

Reminder/Disclaimer/Whatever: Everything in Friday Favorites is something that we use and bought on our own.

Do you have a favorite fall drink? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Fall in Virginia

Fall is here! It became obvious last week that Fall arrived here in Virginia. I love the colors Fall brings us here in Virginia.

Taken at Miller Farms Market, Mine Run, VA

Taken in my garden … this mum is bigger than me. I need to re-home it to another spot in our yard besides my flower bed!

Our front tree and bus waiting bench …

On the Road with the 2012 Kia Rio

Last week, Beth posted a picture of my muddy mug after running the Tough Mudder up in Maryland.  It seems like every time I head up there, Kia is more than happy to let us review a new vehicle.  Maybe they know that, between that long drive and then driving the kids around for the rest of the week, we are going to put the car through it’s paces.  This time they handed over the keys to a bright, shiny Signal Red Kia Rio 5- Door.  When they pulled it up into the driveway, I was impressed right away.  The car has smooth lines, pretty curves, and a great sporty look to it.  Here, have a look!

It’s a sharp looking car, isn’t it?  Let me tell you, it was pretty fun to drive, too.  It corners pretty nicely and has great pickup.  It does have an “Active Eco” button, which helps increase the fuel efficiency.  If you are slow to accelerate, you probably won’t even notice a difference.  If you have a lead foot, like me, you will find a noticeable decrease in the acceleration, but no so much as to take away the sporty feel of the car.

If you travel a lot, you will pretty much love the fuel efficiency in this car.  On the way back from Maryland, I was getting 37 mpg.  That’s pretty incredible, in my estimation.  As I drove around for the next couple of days, though, it quickly dropped down to around 33 mpg.  That’s not bad, but it seemed like a really fast drop from up as high as it was.  For the rest of the week, it maintained an average of  over 30.  That’s pretty great considering all of the hills and stops that we have in this area.

The interior was pretty nice.  There was plenty of cargo space and headroom, the seats were very comfortable, and the steering wheel was fully adjustable, including the ability to telescope in and out.  That meant that my long legs did not have to be all bent up so that I could comfortably reach the steering wheel.

We only had a couple of complaints with the interior.  With the car seats in, the fit for the kids was really tight.  At one point, Sophie almost got stuck between the driver’s seat and the car seat behind it.  This is going to be a problem with any small car, but this seemed really tight and makes me wonder about the legroom for adults sitting back there.  The other issue centers around the rear window of the car.  I did not notice it at first, but Beth, being shorter than me, had trouble seeing out of the small rear window.  After she mentioned it, I have to say that she’s right.  Looking at the rear view mirror, the rear window is very narrow.  I also noticed that looking towards the front corners of the car was impeded by the frame.  The little extra window there did little to address this.  It seems like the curves that make the car so pretty eat into some of the visibility of the car.

Overall, this car was fun to drive.  I felt safe behind the wheel, the dash was very accessible, the bluetooth set up was easy to set up, and the fuel economy was very good.  It is more than powerful enough for me and it can fit two of the kids in car seats, which is fine when the oldest is in school.  The biggest issues that I found were the visibility and the space in the rear seats.  I do not, however, think that either of these issues automatically knock the car out of the running if we start looking for something in the near future.

Friday Favorites: A School Bus Wait Memory

This isn’t a typical Friday Favorite but I hope you can play along …

Grace rides the school bus. Sophie and Matthew love to wait for the bus with Grace. This morning I was coming up the driveway from dropping off the last of the trash at the street and Sophie says “look mom! It is Matthew’s favorite color.” I could see something on the sidewalk but not what it was so I asked her and she said she didn’t know. To my surprise it was a little red lizard.

Well I had to look him up. He is actually a Red Eft which is a young Red Spotted Newt. They are common in this area but like wet areas. I am not sure why he was in our sidewalk and then garden but he was beautiful. The kids loved seeing him and talking about him. It was a good reminder to not touch animals we see outside too.

This morning was a good reminder to take a minute and just wait for the bus and not run out like a crazy mom trying to get Grace on the bus that may or may not be 5 minutes early today.
