Wordless Wednesday: A Walk on the Beach

Sometimes joy is as simple as a morning walk on the beach …

(Taken in Kill Devil Hills, NC)

Let us know where your Wordless Wednesday post is …

How Do You Love the Moment in Virginia Beach?

We went to Virginia Beach several times growing up. We lived about 2.5 hours from Virginia Beach. At one point, my mom had a co-worker who had a small place down there. She let our family stay at her small place a few times. It was so much fun. Well maybe not for mom and dad as I remember dad trying to pack three bikes in the minivan to take them down there to beach. There were great areas to ride bikes so we would beg to take them. Dad always fit them in the van some how. I don’t really know how he did that but I guess it bought him peace with three kids so he made it work! Peace between three kids is hard to come by but we often found it down at Virginia Beach when we would visit.

My favorite stops that I still remember … the Virginia Aquarium. This was a favorite stop on super hot days as it is inside. The aquarium is beautiful and so many exhibits. With modern technology, you can visit the aquarium through their web cams!

The boardwalk … the boardwalk is huge in width and made of cement. I remember packing up the roller blades and roller blading on the boardwalk. I don’t know if that is even allowed but it was great fun even with all of those elbow and knee pads mom made us wear!

I also remember the food down at Virginia Beach. The ice cream place we would always go to. The pizza place that we all loved … I am not sure why but finding a really good pizza place while on travel can be hard. I am impressed there are now Food Tours down there. Brian would love to go on the boardwalk food tour. The two loves of water and great food can’t be beat so I can hardly blame him.

I can’t wait to take our family down to Virginia Beach. The waves are calmer than some other locations and the environment is so family friendly. Plus the pizza and ice cream. Maybe Brian should practice packing bikes in the back of our minivan so we can be ready to head down there to enjoy the summer sun!

Island Farm on Roanoke Island – Outer Banks

We had the chance to visit the Island Farm on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks back in July. Maybe it is odd this post is going up at they are getting nailed with a hurricane but I hope the farm fares well with the weather hitting them!

When we got to the farm, one of the first things everyone saw was the swing. The swing was a rope with a bag on it. Simple, huh? Well look at everyone having fun!!

Next we saw the chickens … Grace was willing to feed chickens. Sophie not so much. She did LOVE getting the eggs from the chicken coop though. This makes me think we may just end up in chickens in our backyard one day. I need to add learning about chicken care to my to-do list!

The farm also has time period games for the children and those that think they are children, like Brian. PLUS they have a hayride with the Ox. Now where else can you have a hayride with an Ox?!

Now if you have been around here for awhile you know Brian loves history … maybe that was part of becoming a Social Studies teacher?! He really loved how hands the historic house was. The kids could touch stuff in the house. See Little Dude touching?!

Overall the Island Farm on Roanoke Island is a hidden treasure on the Outer Banks. Your family will really enjoy the time you have to spend there. Be sure to find them online at www.theislandfarm.com

Oh and be sure to visit the old kitchen … they may just have something from the farm there for you to taste. Little Dude LOVED they had just picked a watermelon!

NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island

While at the Outer Banks last week, we had an invitation to visit the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island and learn about their facility!

We were given a tour and background of the facility by the staff at the aquarium. It was great to not only learn about what they offer now but what they are looking to offer their visitors in the future!

We started our tour by seeing the “Breakfast with the Ray’s” activity. The aquarium offers many Special Activities for visitors. These Special Activities do have extra fees associated with them but if you and your family are looking for a special experience, I am sure they are worth the extra fees. The Special Activities include Snack with the Sharks, Catch a Crab!, Gyotaku (Fish Painting), Nocturnal Beach Creatures, Nautical Wreaths, Breakfast with the Ray’s, Behind the Scenes Tour, Wetlands Walk, and Aqua Tales for Tots. These programs require advanced registration so you need to plan with their schedule to do these activities in advance.

You can see the ray tank in these pictures. We didn’t participate in the feeding but the other hands you see in the tank picture below are all people feeding the rays with little bits of food. My girls wouldn’t put their hands in that tank but I did get to “pet” a few of them. So slimy! I can see my kids getting into these activities as they are older but they were thrilled to see the rays swimming in that tank!

One of the best features of the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island is the hands on approach they have to their facility. They had these great sculptures around the facility and when we asked if the kids could climb on that turtle the answer was “of course!” Score!! The fish are at the entry of the facility and it is a beautiful fountain. The frog is inside at one of the exhibits and the kids just thought he was great. Going back to the turtle though … see the nets behinds us? It is a maze! Brian and the girls had a great time going through there and finding their way back out to us! :)

There is a new exhibit within the aquarium and it is ALL hands on. This is the new turtle rescue exhibit. I numbered the 4 stops in the pictures below. My three kids each went through it with their own turtle. They have these cute lab coats for the kids to put on too but my kids were not willing to play along with that part of the visit. You take your turtle to see what is wrong with it and the computer screen tells you what it is looking at and what it found (Stop 1). Then you take your turtle to make it better and once again the screen tells you what is doing and what you should do to make your turtle better (Stop 2). Once you make your turtle better with the medicine, it needs to recover in the holding tank (Stop 3). And finally, after your turtle is all better, you release it to the wild (Stop 4)! My kids really enjoyed this even though they are all under 5. They didn’t get as much of it as older kids would but they loved to touch and be involved in the exhibit!

Of course, there are tanks with fish and … SHARKS! The girls were really excited about the sharks for some reason.  Maybe it was because they were so close to them in that room? It was really fun to see all of the fish that live in the Outer Banks in some of the tanks at the aquarium too.

Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. The kids were worn out after being there for a few hours which was good for us!;) The aquarium does have a snack/lunch shop if you manage to plan your visit during lunch time!

During our tour of the aquarium, we had the chance to hear about all of the future plans of the facility. They have big plans when it comes to expanding their building, updating their exhibits to be more hands on, and a pier! We hope to visit the Outer Banks again as the kids grow up and I would love to see the pier one of these days!

Have you been to the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island? What is your favorite aquarium? What do you love to see at aquariums? (I just love seeing the pretty fish … nothing specific. I am just a sucker for pretty fish!)

Psst …. you can find the Aquarium on Facebook too!

NOTE: We were provided with admission to the aquarium in exchange for this review. No other compensation was received. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Wordless Wednesday: Outer Banks

This week we are on vacation in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Sun. Sand. Beach. Fun. Right? Well these pictures at least pretend that is the case. ;)

Beach Girls who were too busy playing in the sand to take pictures!

Beach Dude - he seriously HATES sand! Too bad he looks so cute out there in it!

I was snapping away trying to get a good picture of Sophie. When I saw this picture I just laughed though. I guess it starts young … that is getting sand off your butt after your swim suit rides up a little. Every lady out there knows what I mean. Her face is just an added bonus to the pictures. =P Yes, I know one day she will be so horrified I kept this picture but that is a perk of being the mommy!;)

We all feel like this at some point.

Have a great Wednesday!!

This is my entry to the Appliances Online messiest kid competition, check out the other entries at It’s Gravy Baby.
